Opening night at the New Venture Championship is about making a good first impression. The evening kicks off with the Trade Show where teams display their products and pitch their new ventures in an informal setting. It's a great opportunity for the twenty competing teams to start the sales process and, at the same time, size up their competition. The Tektronix Trade Show $1,000 award is given to the team that can best develop a tradeshow strategy that peaks interest and awareness.

A high point of opening night is the Tektronix Elevator Pitch Competition, in which each team sends a representative before the judges (and the audience) to "sell" its business idea in a minute or less. The speaker must be concise, yet thorough and engaging. The team with the most impressive pitch wins $1,000 and gains a boost of confidence for the semifinal round.
